A hair transplant is a surgical procedure which transfers a
patient's own hairs from a donor area to areas of the scalp that
are undergoing hair loss or thinning. The donor area is often the
back or sides of the head and these hairs are genetically
programmed to be permanent. As such, once these donor hairs are
moved during the hair transplant procedure, they will continue to
grow for a lifetime.
While there are many different hair transplant techniques, some
of the best results obtained today use the technique of follicular
unit grafting. A follicular unit is the term used to describe the
natural groupings of one, two, three and occasionally four hairs.
